A Living Room/House Concert provides a unique experience to hear an up close performance in an intimate, informal atmosphere, sitting on sofas, armchairs, fold up dining chairs, etc. in your living room, family room, garden, etc.

The hosts of a house concert is generally people that love and support music. Some are fans, some are musicians themselves, some have occasional concerts and others hold regular ones. Most of them do it because they just love music and the company of family, friends and neighbours.
Hosting a Living Room Concert can be an exciting and rewarding experience for everyone. Word on the street is that house concerts are the "new phenomenon" I would suggest that there is nothing new in the idea at parties, hootenanny's and poetry readings and the like were always a happening in alternative venues...and now the popularity of House Concerts is rapidly growing throughout the US, Canada, the UK and Europe.

Any living room, basement, conservatory, family room, etc. that can seat 20 - 30 people comfortably is perfect. How you arrange the room is up to you, you can set the room like a theatre or more informally with sofas, chairs, cushions, etc. A combination of both is even better, as long as everyone can see and hear the musician. Weather permitting concerts can also be held on patios or in gardens.

The host cost is comperable to throwing a party. You can provide some snacks and drinks or make it a pot-luck and ask your guest to bring something. The food should be simple and inexpensive...the focus should be the music. The money for the musician, is raised by donations from your guests, (it can be a set price or a suggested donation.) In addition, it is not unusual for hosts to provide accommodation for the musician, and if necessary, a small PA or other amplification.

The concert is time is decided by you, but is usually two 45 minute sets with a break. Guests should arrive at least 30 minutes before the start of the concert so they can get a drink, relax and settle in. 10 minutes before the start of the concert the host can ask everyone to have a seat and make the introductions. At the break you can invite thank people for coming, make your guests aware that Albey and Jane are independent musicians that live by sharing their art with the world. Invite your guests to chat with the artists and generously support them further by buying their cd's.
After the concert, enjoy the good food and conversation!

Now that you've booked the artist , it's time to invite your guests. The musician can supply you with printed materials and other electronic media to help you. Then, invite everyone you know to experience this unique private concert. Invite family, relatives, friends, workmates and neighbours. Via email, printed invites and word of mouth. Ask them to invite thier friends to an event like no other. These concerts are by private invitation only, you can make it R.S.V.P to reserve seats based on the amount of space you have and the number of guests you anticipate. Typically 25-30% of those invited will be available to attend your house concert. There will be cancellations, sometimes you will have a waiting list to fill the space.
Send the invites at least 4-5 weeks before the date, longer if possible. Make follow up calls and email a reminder up to 2 weeks later. However you decide to host your soire, or aftenoon tea...the musician will be available to help in all aspects to make your Living Room Concert experience one you'll will always remember.
