"get your free(k) jazz on...Saturday Night Live isn't the only reason to stay in and veg out in front of the tv on the weekends. Manhattan Cable Network is one of those wonderfully weird local stations where anyone with video capability can sign up for a show and speak their peace for a half-hour. While you usually get all manner of religious nuts, geeks and esoteric stuff, you also finding winning programs like Abop TV.
With their mission of "Bringing the free-garde to your desktop commercial free since 2003!", they present assorted local jazz legends like Sabir Mateen, Roy Campbell and Daniel Carter (all Vision Festival regulars) alongside tributes to Miles, Ornette and blues legend Howlin' Wolf. It's not part of your standard cable package so be grateful that it's available on the web. "

"GREAT web site!"

"Music surely is the primary tool for creating
and nurturing new ideas and new sounds. What better way to smooth your
idea into something tangible then to listen to some Jazz or in the case
of abop-tv to watch and listen to Jazz...a growing site that presents a
wealth of music/video to download and listen to. It offers some intriguing
cuts that integrate interesting video editing with a mixture of live Jazz.
Check it out."

"besides tuning into the CBGB Lounge on Sunday
evenings...another place to get an avant fix is through aboptv.com, a neato
new site where you can actually download and watch some fantastic archived
performances by some of the best of the new (and old) improvisers out there
in jazzland, and for a guy who's been perusing these sounds for nigh on
twenny-five years it's a real gas to actually see these legendary (and
not-so, at least for now) big-names in a little pond more or less performing
rather'n hafta imagine what it looks like in your bean, and imagine it
all wrong for that matter. Aboptv's the brainkiddie of Albey Balgochian,
not only a member of the fantastic Noistet but the current bassist for
none other than Cecil Taylor himself, and the man oughta be commended for
his toil in bringing you these rarities... It may take awhile for the program
to eventually download (I suggest that you start downloading, then take
a long bath, or perhaps talk on the phone for a few hours or go shopping
then come back), but when it does you not only get a clear picture w/o
any of the usual buffering stops, but an exciting piece of performance
that's not only aurally, but visually stimulating. With kicks getting even
harder to find these days than they were after the great post-punk collapse
of the early-eighties, it's grand to have a site like aboptv.com available
and for FREE"

Abop TV: A Music Channel Actually Offering Music
By Jason Santo, Apr 1, 2004, 07:18
While not entirely within the context of MicrocinemaScene,
news of the on-line music channel Abop TV paints this innovative new website
as a cousin to sites such as this. Taking a grassroots approach that allows
musicians (for a small fee) to broadcast their concerts over the web, Abop
TV debuted on New Year's day, 2004 and has been well-received by an international
audience. Documenting improvisational artists who run the full musical
spectrum from the avant-garde "Zeitgeist Art Gallery" series, to Berklee
Professors, to Handy Award winning country blues singers, Abop TV was created
to offer a music scene that is missing from network and cable television.
The site runs a different concert every week, each one available 24 hours
a day for 4-5 days. Musicians and music lovers interested in checking out
such a creature should visit www.aboptv.com.
